Manna Aero Expands Drone Delivery Operations in the U.S.

The rise of autonomous drone delivery services has captured the attention of businesses and consumers alike. Manna Aero, an Ireland-based startup, is poised to make significant strides in this burgeoning market with its recent announcement of a major U.S. expansion. The startup's strategy includes scaling its operations team to between 200 and 300 employees in the next 12 months, a task that Healy emphasizes is contingent on the growth pace outside Tulsa. Manna is eyeing six additional U.S. cities for expansion, with plans to launch operations in these locations by the end of 2027, assuming all goes well.

Manna’s unique operational model involves using automated, remotely monitored drones that deliver packages without landing. Instead, they lower the packages via a tether, a method similar to that employed by industry giants like Zipline and Google’s Wing. Manna operates on a delivery-as-a-service model, charging clients per flight while maintaining diverse revenue streams through partnerships with food delivery services like DoorDash and Deliveroo, as well as its own consumer-facing app.

While Manna Aero remains headquartered in Ireland—with its research and development, administrative, and manufacturing operations based there—the decision to pull back from drone delivery operations in Ireland was made last month. The company cited restrictive planning regulations as a barrier to scaling its services. This pivot towards the U.S. market reflects a strategic decision to invest heavily in an environment perceived as more favorable for growth.

The regulatory landscape in the United States has played a crucial role in Manna's expansion plans. Healy noted that policies under the Trump administration and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have provided a significant boost to the industry, creating a conducive environment for companies like Manna to thrive. Despite being a relatively new entrant in the U.S. market, Manna has already started operations in 2023 within the AllianceTexas Mobility Innovation Zone, a planned community near Dallas. This initial foothold in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area will serve as a launchpad for further scaling efforts in the region over the next year. Healy believes that while Manna may be slightly behind its competitors, the company is committed to catching up quickly.
